Our history begins in 1997 when Jeff Dyer started Mountain View Compiler Company to pursue his passion for making precise language machines. This continues to be his guiding motivation as chief technologist. "Some things," he says, "just have to work well to be useful."
     John Harrison, the maker of the first marine chronometer, knew that to be useful for maritime navigation a clock must be accurate to within ten seconds per month while at sea. This was about ten times more accurate than the best terrestrial clocks available at the time. Anything less accurate would be practically useless for determining longitude.
     We know that to be useful software must satisfy specific, sometimes extreme, requirements for performance and reliability. We also know that such criteria are not satisfied by accident. Skill and creativity are prerequisites. Planning and attention to detail at every step of the way are required. Our passion for quality is critical to our success, and we wouldn't have it any other way.
